While watching 'The Haunting' (1963) I was greatly inspired by the unstable staircase and the camera looking down the stairs seeing a figure emerging near the bottom, at first just seeing a tray with a rope on it then the woman emerging. Stopping the moment in a still we can still draw a conclusion of what she was bout to do. The camera hanging over the staircase creates a sensation of a supernatural presence. Captured in a still it can trap the viewer in a sense of falling or about to fall or even seeing past fear and waiting for something to emerge...
